Hungry Press: Mission & Vision
The Mission
Hungry Press is an independent publisher dedicated to bridging the gap between the special needs experience and universal human curiosity. We cultivate a soft landing for authors and readers by producing nature-inspired, spooky-funny stories that replace clinical, sterile perspectives with warmth, empathy, and humor. Through our commitment to “Welcoming Hands,” we amplify the voices of the special-needs community, using the wonders of the natural world to foster connection, independence, and joy for families everywhere.
The Vision
To become a leading voice in inclusive storytelling, where nature-inspired education and lived experiences dismantle barriers of perception. We envision a world where every family, regardless of ability, is empowered to share their unique story, and where our community-driven publishing model serves as a sustainable foundation for vocational training and lifelong learning.
The Story Behind The Hungry Chromosome
At the heart of every great story is a hunger, a desire to understand, to connect, and to grow. For us, that hunger has a name, a face, and a legacy.
Hungry Press is a labor of love born from The Hungry Chromosome LLC, an independent publishing house inspired by my son, Stephen. Stephen was born with Down syndrome, and as our family navigated the world of clinical diagnoses and sterile medical perspectives, we began to see his extra chromosome differently. Rather than viewing it as a deficiency, we came to see it as a gift of immense appetite—the most “hungry” chromosome of all.
It is a chromosome that hungers for joy, for deep human connection, and for stories that embrace the fullness of life.
We founded this press to feed that hunger. We believe that the stories we tell should not be defined by labels or limitations, but by the same warmth, empathy, and “spooky-funny” wonder that Stephen brings into our lives every day. We are here to create a “soft landing” for readers—a place where nature, humor, and lived experience meet to bridge the gap between “special” and “universal.”
Everything we publish, starting with our inaugural series, is dedicated to that spirit. We invite you to join us at the table, share in our stories, and help us turn the page on a world that is more inclusive, more curious, and, above all, more connected.
